Any One Book #18

I’ve actually managed to get a lot of reading done this past month, it makes a nice change. I think the long journeys up to Birmingham were particularly helpful.

Anyway, my point is I have quite a few reviews to post, but before that I thought it best to crack on with this month’s Any One Book. Continue reading

Please Help Find Nichole

I’ve reblogged this from Guapola and I hope you’ll reblog it too, please!

HMV Survey for my Essay

Here comes some begging, maybe a hint of grovelling with just a dash of desperate pleading.

I am writing an essay, and I’m sure all of you know that means research (insert sad face), which is a massive pain in anyone’s side.

As you may have guessed my essay is about HMV (at least it’s not something dreadfully dull) and so is the survey.

So far I have around 30% of the amount of responses I’m aiming for and I would really appreciate it if you could take the survey, it’s only ten questions and shouldn’t take too long.

I have no incentives to offer, but I do have emotional blackmail, mwa hahahahaha. If you take the survey you will make this horrid academic year slightly more bearable, just think of those charity adverts with the tigers or the donkeys and imagine a voice over narrating my story (which is basically masters is hard) and instead of having to give money all you have to do is answer the survey.

You will forever have my gratitude, just click in the link and I’ll never bother you with another survey, well at least not until it’s dissertation time:

Thank you!

Happy Casual Vacancy Day

Yes, it’s finally here!

Five years after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, J.K. Rowling will be launching a new book.

But it’s not just any book, it’s one that’s so far from Potter that it’s almost unbelievable it’s by the same author.

Over the past few days more details have been revealed. It’s not a fantasy or anything supernatural, it’s not a crime, mystery or thriller novel. In fact it’s hard to say exactly what it is. Rowling herself said that if it was to be summed up in a question it would be ‘what do we do with Krystal?’ yet what we do know is that this is NOT a book for children. Continue reading

Words Are Wind

I have a lot of favourite quotes, some come from Harry potter (what a surprise), some from people in general and while the Song of Ice and Fire series has given me more to add to that list I have to say I despise the quote written above.

For some reason George R.R. Martin is obsessed with it as if it has some deep meaning that he alone has discovered. Which is very annoying, because it’s superficial. It suggests that he doesn’t understand the power of words which is incredibly stupid because he’s an author. Continue reading

Colorado Shooting

I want to pay my respects to the 12 people killed in Colorado this morning at the midnight screening of the new Batman film. I’ve been watching it on the news all day and it was such a disgusting act of violence that it’s almost incomprehensible that someone could conceive such a plan and carry it through.

The witness accounts are absolutely horrendous, talk of all that blood and the bodies and the utter fear of being under fire. The fact that a child as young as three months old makes it really hit home how ruthless the shooter is.

How did he come to be in possession of so many weapons? What sort of sick person decides to open fire in a cinema?

At least he has been arrested now, and hopefully he won’t be able to hurt anyone else, he won’t be able to devastate anymore lives. I have confidence that the police there will be able to un-booby trap his flat

My thoughts are with the friends and family of all the victims, and I hope the survivors make a full recovery.

Syrian Violence is Getting Out of Hand

Do you know what I don’t understand?

Syria, or to be more accurate the needless violence. I don’t understand what drives a man to slaughter his own people, you know the ones that any government official is supposed to protect. I mean could you imagine David Cameron turning around in a few months time and ordering the army to terrorise us with endless showers of shells or determined sniper bullets? I don’t understand why Bashar al-Assad is doing it.

What can possibly justify his actions? Continue reading

Cyber World is Getting Dangerous.

Sigh. I have a love hate relationship with technology. I love the amazing things that keep coming out, I love touch screens, I love iPods and I love that I can write posts like this and people I’ve never met can read it.

Yet I hate what it’s doing to the cornerstones of our culture. My CD collection is dwindling while my iTunes library is 5684 tracks strong, my bookshelves are full to breaking point but I look around me and I see so many people with eReaders in their hands, art is so readily available online that no one need go out and discover classics in galleries. Photos From The Convention.

If anyone is interested here are a few photos from yesterday. I’ve put parts of my previous blog post beneath them just to give you an idea of when in the day the photo is from.

The Harry Potter talk

“…In two minutes a Harry Potter talk would begin and I had a sly suspicion that Evanna Lynch would be there…”

Regular reading?

Ok, So I was thinking I could add a regular feature to this blog.

I thought, perhaps, once a month I review or just randomly blabber on about a book I’ve read. I’ll give you a heads-up on what the next book will be so if you want (and if you’ve got it) you can read it too and discuss it in the post.

I thought it would be nice to add something regular because I do talk about a lot of different stuff and it is a bit all over the place. The reason I do that, though, is because I have a habit of getting bored if I’m only focusing on one thing. But it’d be nice to have somethong constant to come back to.

Anyway, if you like the idea, awesome! I’m always open to name suggestions too! The only idea I have at the moment is Any One Thing’s Any One Book.

I look forward to hearing from you.
