Okay, so I get that things are different in Russia. I get that it’s stricter there and that things we couldn’t conceive happening here happen there.

Like being arrested for protesting.

Sure Pussy Riot performed in a church/cathedral wearing balaclavas but when you really get down to the nitty-gritty of it all they were doing was protesting. Everyone has the right to protest, everyone should be able to protest without the fear of being thrown in jail.

It is after all the essence of freedom of speech, if you have an opinion or you don’t like something you should be able to say. To stamp out freedom of speech is an action of the scared and weak. If you can’t handle what people have to say then you shouldn’t be in a position of power, President Putin.

Throwing three mothers in prison for speaking out is not a powerful move, in fact I believe President Putin said, while he was at the London 2012 games, that they should not be judged too harshly.

Well guess what, they have. Two years in prison, two years away from their children and no doubt two years of protesting from their supporters.  You can hardly throw everyone who disagrees with you in prison.

It’s a violation of human rights.

In truth I had not heard of Pussy Riot until they hit the news, I doubt many people had, but now they’ve become a symbol of sorts. A symbol created by the harshness of their punishment and support of hight profile celebrities such as Stephen Fry. The US, the EU and Amnesty International are also outraged by the verdict, yet how likely is it that Russia will even listen?

Even so, free Pussy Riot, they did not deserve this, they did not commit a crime. In fact the crime here is the excessive punishment. Free Pussy Riot because you can’t stamp out music and freedom of speech and it’s foolish to even try.
